The Magic of OTs in Pelvic Health...

While the training in school for Physical Therapists & Occupational Therapists looks different, the end result is rehab providers who focus on whole-body, holistic care intended to improve function, mechanics, and structure to meet our patients' goals. So what does Occupational Therapy bring to the field?

A Holistic Approach

Like PTs, OTs take a whole-person approach to our care. We meet you where you are and provide modifications and adaptations to help you decrease discomfort and do the things you love all while building the skills you need to stay symptom-free.

Behavioral and Sensory Support

OTs address behavioral, sensory, and psychosocial elements, offering a comprehensive approach to your care. Psychosocial factors that may be targeted in OT include the physical, mental, and emotional stresses of daily life, sleep quality, and mental health, as they relate to your symptoms and diagnoses. We are here to help you build the care team you need through our numerous referral sources - after all it does take a village!

Task Modifications

OTs are the experts on modifying daily tasks such as:

  • Teaching you to get off of the couch or out of bed during pregnancy with minimal pain
  • Empowering you to care for yourself and your little one after a vaginal or c-section delivery
  • Improving your work space to reduce strain or stress on the body, especially the neck and low back
  • Learning effective ways to dress and undress without exacerbating pain or an injury
  • Plus many more…

Daily Habits

We all hate getting the questions “How much water and fiber are you getting in daily? Or “How often are you going to the bathroom?” Let us help you create and stick to a toileting and nutrition routine that fits your lifestyle while working to say goodbye to urinary or bowel leaking, urgency, and/or constipation. Improve your routines and ditch the annoying questions from your other medical providers!

Adaptive Tools

OTs are highly skilled in recommending and training you in using tools to improve challenging tasks. For example, the use of a handheld bidet may be helpful for those with pain or limited mobility with wiping.

  • Other adaptive tools may include:
  • Grab bars
  • Squatty potty
  • Raised toilet seats
  • Padded seat cushions for painful sitting
  • Use of pillows or wedges for navigating intimacy
  • Pelvic wands, dilators, and the OhNut for pelvic pain

Intimacy

Pelvic health occupational therapists can provide strategies to reduce discomfort and enhance communication and connection with your partner. This may include:

  • Learning new positions to accommodate pain, limited range of motion, and other symptoms
  • Use of external supports such as pillows or positioning aids to increase both your and your partner’s comfort (and pleasure)
  • Coaching for communication with your partner can improve your comfort and help you feel safe in intimate settings while experiencing your pelvic floor symptoms. Feel free to bring your partner to your therapy sessions, if desired!
  • Teaching relaxation exercises and focusing on nervous system regulation can reduce pelvic tension, stress, and anxiety around symptoms with the goal of reducing barriers to intimacy.

Parenting

Time to say goodbye to your upper back and neck pain when taking care of your kiddos! OT can help support symptom reduction in your role as a parent with activities like

  • lifting and carrying your child safely (time to say 'goodbye' to Mother's thumb!)
  • improving feeding positions (regardless of what method you choose to feed your little one)
  • and keeping your body safe and comfortable during any other tasks and movements that parenting requires

What Our Patients Are Saying

Dr. Marlena is AMAZING! She truly helped me get back on track with my physical health, which aided my mental health, too. I highly recommend her and this organization for anyone dealing with neurological issues, as well as anything else related to pelvic floor strengthening. They truly work with you to help you meet your healing journey goals.

Dr. Joy is by far the best pelvic PT I have ever worked with. Not only is she understanding and approachable. She is by far the most knowledgeable. After years of pain and different doctors/PT's she is by far the best. Not only a great PT but a great human. I highly recommend her treatment.
