March 18, 2024

Welcome to Pints & Pelvic Floors: The Podcast. In Episode 34 I was lucky enough to sit down with one of my favorite pelvic floor therapists, Dr Alex Hill. Alex and I started our pelvic training together in Florida and have ended up living in the same places at the same time from Florida to Maryland before she moved back south. Basically, we were meant to meet!

  • In this episode, Dr Alex discusses some of the areas she helps her patients with including:
  • Radiation fibrosis after radiation therapy which, if left untreated with dilator therapy, can result in scarring/stenosis which will fuse the vagina or anus closed
  • Lymphedema which can be found in the full body and how important it is to provide safe treatment and education to our patients; especially when considering it’s impact on sexual health
  • Providers should connect patients with as much support as possible including oncology PT/OTs at the time of diagnosis!
  • Rehab shouldn’t be an afterthought when it comes to issues related to oncology or general pelvic health concerns. We should strive to be more proactive and less reactive.
  • In 2020 Dr Alex launched OncoPelvic PT! OncoPelvic PT provides:
  • Education for patients in the realm of oncology & pelvic floor therapy
  • Courses for providers to help bridge the gaps of information out there to help patients in the oncology space
  • Representation of:
  • Bodies with all different skin tones, scars, stretch marks, foreskins, etc. in all of her education materials
  • Considerations for patients in various zip codes or different socioeconomic standards
  • Case studies with diverse patients who are cisgender, transgender, and non-binary to normalize the representation of the patients we are truly seeing in clinic
  • The current courses Dr. Alex offers are designed to be
  • Accessible - on-demand so you aren’t burning through PTO
  • Affordable - not everyone can pay $600 for each CEU course
  • Ways to work with Dr Alex
  • Online information for patients
  • Take her continuing education for providers
  • Book a coaching session to discuss clinical cases or professional development if you are interested in specializing in pelvic floor or oncology physical therapy
